In a significant step toward modernizing its aging fleet and reinforcing national defence, Indonesia has signed a landmark agreement with Turkiye to purchase 48 of its KAAN fighter jets. The announcement was made today by the Indonesian Ministry of Defence, marking a major milestone in the country’s ongoing efforts to upgrade its military capabilities.
This contract was finalized on Saturday during the International Defence Industry Fair in Istanbul. Indonesian Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin was present at the signing ceremony, underlining the importance of the collaboration between the two nations. The deal represents more than just a military purchase—it’s a commitment to technological cooperation and long-term strategic partnership.
Although the exact value of the contract and delivery timeline has not been disclosed, what’s clear is the ambition behind it. The KAAN fighter jet, developed by Turkiye, made its maiden flight in February last year and has been hailed as the country’s first fifth-generation combat aircraft. It’s expected to go into serial production by 2028 and will be powered by two General Electric F-110 engines—the same used in the battle-proven F-16s.
Indonesia’s interest in diversifying its defence assets doesn’t stop here. The country had already signed a deal to procure 42 French Rafale fighter jets in 2022 for approximately USD 8.1 billion. It is also in talks with the U.S. for the F-15EX jets and is considering China’s J-10 as part of its broader modernization agenda.
In a further show of commitment to strengthening its naval capabilities, Indonesia also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Turkiye’s TAIS Shipyard to acquire two Milgem Istif class frigates. While the details of this deal are still under wraps, the cooperation signals an expanding defence relationship between Jakarta and Ankara.
This isn’t just about hardware—it’s about building a stronger, more resilient Indonesia that can protect its sovereignty and assert its role on the global stage. With today’s announcement, the nation takes a powerful step in that direction.
