Dubai Runners Find a Cool New Way to Beat the Heat: The City’s First “Mallathon”

Dubai has found a way to turn shopping malls into running tracks—and residents are loving it.

On August 1, the city kicked off the very first Dubai Mallathon—a month-long fitness initiative that transforms nine of Dubai’s malls into indoor walking and running paths. From early morning at 7 a.m., participants lace up their sneakers, dodge store displays, and make their way past coffee shops and fashion outlets, all while staying cool and safe from the blistering summer heat.

The idea couldn’t have come at a better time. With temperatures reaching record highs, outdoor running has become nearly impossible. The Mallathon gives fitness lovers a much-needed alternative: the ability to get their steps in without risking heat exhaustion.

During weekdays, the vibe is laid-back, allowing walkers and runners to go at their own pace. But weekends turn up the energy with official races—2.5 km, 5 km, and 10 km—complete with medals, prizes, and plenty of bragging rights.

“The response from all classes of society has been overwhelming,” shared Fawzia Faridoon, Head of Community Events at the Dubai Sports Council.

Many runners say the Mallathon has been a game changer. “In the evenings, I usually want to go out for a run, but it’s just too hot,” said participant Aswati Vadakkeppattu. “An initiative like this, inside the mall, it’s wonderful. I don’t have to settle for just the treadmill anymore.”

With the Mallathon running throughout August, Dubai is proving that even in extreme heat, community, fitness, and fun can thrive—sometimes right past the food court.
