Trump Warns NYC Faces ‘Total Disaster’ If Mamdani Wins Mayoral Election, Endorses Cuomo Instead

On the eve of New York City’s mayoral election, U.S. President Donald Trump issued a stark warning to voters, saying the city could face a “complete and total economic and social disaster” if Democratic Socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani becomes mayor. Trump made the remarks on Truth Social while publicly endorsing former New York governor Andrew Cuomo for the position.

Trump stated that Mamdani’s leadership would jeopardize the city’s “survival,” and suggested he would only send the minimum federal support required if Mamdani wins.

Trump wrote, “If Communist candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the election for mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing federal funds, other than the very minimum as required…This once great city has ZERO chance of success, or even survival!”

He further argued that NYC “can only get worse with a Communist at the helm,” and urged voters to support Cuomo, saying, “Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice. You must vote for him.”

Mamdani, 34, born in Uganda and raised in New York, is a New York State Assembly member and a Democratic Socialist. He is running against Cuomo—now an independent candidate—and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Mamdani’s campaign has gained momentum, with promises to lower living costs, freeze stabilized rents, and prioritize affordable housing development.

Trump, however, called Mamdani “a nothing” in his Assembly role, claiming he has “NO CHANCE to bring [NYC] back to its former glory,” and asserted that his principles “never once have been successful.”

Voters across the U.S. head to polling stations on November 4, with New Yorkers deciding the future of their city from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. More than 735,000 people have already voted early—four times more than in the 2021 election cycle. With current mayor Eric Adams out of the race due to ongoing scandals, the outcome will mark a significant turning point for New York City.
