The calm waters of Dal Lake may soon face a challenging swell.
In response to rising water levels in the River Jhelum, the Jammu & Kashmir Lakes Conservation and Management Authority (J&K LCMA) has issued an advisory for the cherished community living in and around Dal Lake—particularly the families residing on houseboats and traditional homes by the water.
As of now, the Jhelum River has breached the danger mark of 21 feet, triggering precautionary emergency measures. One such measure involves the possible opening of the Ram Munshi Bagh floodgate, which, though necessary, may cause a surge in Dal Lake’s current water level of 10.5 feet.
This increase, though uncertain in exact scale, could bring real risk to life, livelihood, and property for many who have called these waters home for generations. The ripple effects may range from temporary disruptions to the difficult decision of relocation.
LCMA’s message is clear but compassionate:
Take every safety measure seriously. Be aware. Stay connected. And if necessary, please be ready to move to relief centres, which have already been arranged by the District Administration of Srinagar.
This isn’t just an administrative update—it’s a heartfelt request to a resilient community that has stood through time and tide. Let’s be cautious, prepared, and most of all, united.
