Anwar-Putin Meeting Takes Center Stage as Malaysia Strengthens Ties with Russia

MOSCOW, May 14 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s second day in Russia is marked by a highly anticipated meeting with President Vladimir Putin — a pivotal moment in his official visit that reflects Malaysia’s commitment to deepening global partnerships.

Set against the historic backdrop of the Kremlin, the bilateral meeting will begin at 1pm local time (6pm in Malaysia), where Anwar and Putin will engage in a candid conversation about the future of Malaysia-Russia relations. Their dialogue is expected to cover key areas such as trade, education, energy, aerospace, agriculture, and mutual geopolitical interests.

For Anwar, this isn’t just a diplomatic formality — it’s a hands-on effort to ensure Malaysia is actively engaged on the international stage, building strategic alliances that matter.

Later in the day, Anwar is also expected to meet Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, adding another layer of dialogue with Russian leadership. His schedule continues with a courtesy call from Sheikh Ravil Gaynutdin, the Grand Mufti of Russia and chairman of the country’s Religious Board of Muslims — a nod to cultural and interfaith respect during the visit.

Anwar’s arrival in Moscow on Tuesday evening was greeted with ceremonial honours at Vnukovo-2 International Airport, marking the beginning of a four-day official trip at the personal invitation of President Putin.

He leads a robust delegation of over 70 officials, including key cabinet members like Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Agriculture Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, and others from science, education, and commodity sectors — underlining the multi-sector approach Malaysia is pursuing.

The day began with a roundtable session between Malaysian ministers and 24 of Russia’s leading companies and business chambers, aiming to spark new economic opportunities and trade collaborations. It was a room full of potential, where ideas flowed freely and long-term partnerships began to take shape.

As the world watches, Anwar’s presence in Russia signals Malaysia’s drive to be both a bridge-builder and a forward-thinking global partner.
