New South Wales (NSW) police have imposed a ban on all public gatherings across Sydney for the next 14 days following a devastating attack at Bondi Beach. The move comes as the state government strengthens weapons and protest laws, aiming to prevent further tragedy, according to an ABC report cited by Sputnik/RIA Novosti.
NSW Police Commissioner Mal Layon emphasized that any public protest or gathering at this moment could “aggravate fear and divisiveness in the community.” Authorities are working hand-in-hand with government officials and local community leaders to implement the new measures transparently, ensuring safety while promoting community cohesion.
The decision follows a shocking gun attack on December 14 at Bondi Beach during a Hanukkah candle-lighting ceremony. Police identified the attackers as a 50-year-old father and his 24-year-old son. The violent incident claimed the lives of 16 people, including one of the attackers, and left 40 others injured.
In response, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese reiterated the government’s commitment to tightening gun laws nationwide. Proposed reforms may limit the number of firearms an individual can legally own. Meanwhile, NSW authorities have introduced legislation granting police the authority to ban street protests for up to three months if they are deemed of a terrorist nature.
