Billionaire Tycoon Ananda Krishnan Passes Away at 86

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 28 — Ananda Krishnan, the billionaire entrepreneur whose business empire spanned telecommunications, media, and oil and gas, has passed away at the age of 86. His private investment company, Usaha Tegas Sdn Bhd, confirmed the news in a statement yesterday, noting that he died peacefully.

“The family kindly requests privacy during this time of mourning,” the statement read. “Ananda’s legacy is one of immense contributions to nation-building and the corporate sector. His philanthropic efforts have profoundly impacted countless lives.”

Ranked as Malaysia’s sixth-richest individual by Forbes, with an estimated net worth of US$5.1 billion (RM22.66 billion), Ananda Krishnan rose to prominence during the 1980s and 1990s. His notable ventures included Maxis Bhd, Astro Malaysia Holdings Bhd, and Bumi Armada Bhd, among others.

Despite his wealth and influence, Ananda was known for avoiding the limelight, leading a quiet life split between Malaysia and France.

Media outlets have often highlighted his family’s unique dynamic. His only son embraced a monastic life as a Buddhist monk in Thailand, while his two daughters chose not to engage in the family’s business interests.

Ananda Krishnan leaves behind a towering legacy in both the corporate and philanthropic realms, remembered not only for his entrepreneurial acumen but also for his enduring commitment to giving back to society.
