Centre Approves 5,061 Houses for Jammu & Kashmir Under PMAY-G Special Project

Srinagar: In a significant step toward rebuilding lives and restoring dignity, the Central Government has sanctioned the construction of 5,061 new houses in Jammu and Kashmir under a special project of the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana–Gramin (PMAY-G). This project specifically targets families living in rural parts of the Union Territory who were affected by recent natural calamities—including devastating floods and landslides.

The initiative comes as a ray of hope for thousands who lost the safety of their homes and the stability of their daily lives. The homes will not only provide shelter but also serve as a foundation for regaining financial, emotional, and social security.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for their swift and sensitive response.

“I am grateful to the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji and Hon’ble Union Minister of Rural Development Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan Ji for sanctioning the construction of 5,061 houses damaged due to recent natural calamities across rural areas of J&K. This approval will bring back safety and stability to thousands of households,” said LG Sinha.

“A new home means a new beginning. It means families can start again—with dignity, with purpose, and with renewed strength. It will significantly improve their overall well-being,” he added.

According to officials from the Rural Development Department, the construction of these houses will be executed on a priority basis. The goal is early rehabilitation of the affected families, with a vision that stretches beyond bricks and mortar. By focusing on local employment and involving rural labor in the construction process, the project is expected to breathe life back into many village economies as well.

The announcement has been met with relief and appreciation from affected communities and panchayat representatives, who have lauded the government’s timely intervention. They called it not just a policy move, but a much-needed compassionate response to those who were suffering silently.
