Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vowed that those behind the deadly car explosion near Delhi’s historic Red Fort “will not be spared,” as police launch a full-scale investigation under India’s primary anti-terrorism law.
The tragic blast, which occurred Monday evening, has left the nation in deep shock. At least eight people lost their lives, and 20 others were injured when a car exploded near the Red Fort—a site symbolic of India’s independence and national pride. The explosion tore through one of the busiest areas of Old Delhi, leaving wrecked cars, mangled bodies, and widespread devastation in its wake.
Speaking in Bhutan during his scheduled visit, Modi expressed sorrow over the incident. “Today, I have come to Bhutan with a very heavy heart,” he said, addressing a public gathering. “The horrific incident that happened in Delhi last evening has deeply disturbed everyone. Our agencies will get to the very bottom of this conspiracy. The conspirators behind this will not be spared. All those responsible will be brought to justice.”
Deputy Commissioner of Police Raja Banthia confirmed that a case has been registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), along with the Explosives Act and other criminal laws. “The investigation is at a preliminary stage, and it would be premature to comment,” he told reporters.
Authorities sealed off the area, closing the nearby Red Fort Metro Station as forensic teams scoured the site. Early reports suggest that a slow-moving car stopped at a traffic signal before it exploded around 7 PM. Police are working to identify the vehicle’s owner and understand whether the occupants were among the deceased.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has assured the public of a swift and thorough probe, with findings expected soon. Meanwhile, grief-stricken families have gathered at Lok Nayak Hospital, hoping for updates on their loved ones.
The Red Fort, a symbol of India’s sovereignty and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, holds deep national significance—it is where Prime Ministers deliver the Independence Day address each year. The tragedy has therefore struck a painful emotional chord nationwide.
As India mourns, the message from its leadership is clear: the attack will not divide, but unite. Justice will be served, and resilience will prevail.
