What was supposed to be a safe and sacred space for mothers and newborns has now become the center of a growing controversy in Srinagar. A video, reportedly shot by a doctor inside the labour room and operation theatre of a government maternity hospital, went viral on social media this Wednesday—drawing widespread condemnation from the public and the medical community alike.
The short clip, which shows the doctor casually walking through critical areas of the hospital, has raised alarm bells about patient privacy, ethical medical conduct, and professionalism. The most disturbing aspect? The video appears to have been filmed while a surgical procedure was underway.
For countless people—especially women—hospitals represent places of vulnerability and trust. When a doctor, a figure expected to uphold the highest standards of discretion and care, casually records and shares footage from such a sensitive environment, it doesn’t just violate privacy—it breaks trust.
Even fellow doctors didn’t hold back. Many in the fraternity expressed deep disappointment, calling the act irresponsible and completely out of line with professional standards.
The Principal of Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar, which oversees the maternity hospital, promptly ordered a formal inquiry. The committee has been directed to submit its report within 24 hours.
Authorities stated the doctor’s conduct not only breaches patient confidentiality but also violates clear directives laid down by the Medical Council of India (MCI). It may even fall under punishable acts defined in the Information Technology Act of 2000.
This isn’t the first time medical ethics in the region have come under the spotlight. Just days earlier, a female journalist was reportedly mistreated by doctors at the SMHS Hospital. That incident had already stirred the public mood, and this latest episode has further deepened concerns over accountability and sensitivity within the healthcare system.
In light of these recurring incidents, health experts and civil society members are now demanding systemic reforms. They’re not just asking for investigations—they’re calling for renewed compassion, ethical training, and leadership that puts patients before power or pride.
