Flood Alert at Sangam: Authorities on High Alert as Jhelum Rises Rapidly

Srinagar, Sep 03 — Tension is growing across the Kashmir Valley as water levels in the Jhelum River surge past the flood alert mark at Sangam, raising alarms for potential flooding in several low-lying areas. Authorities are urging residents to stay alert, as more rain is expected in the coming hours.

The Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) Department has confirmed that the situation is being closely monitored. According to Er Showkat Hussain, Chief Engineer of I&FC Kashmir, the water at Sangam is rising at an alarming rate of 1.5 feet per hour.

“We are on high alert. All our teams are fully mobilized on the ground. Vulnerable points are being continuously monitored, and we’ve reinforced those areas with sandbags and other essential safety measures,” said Hussain.

He reassured that no major breaches have occurred yet, except for a minor breach at Vecho Nala in Kulgam, which has already been addressed.

Meanwhile, the administration isn’t taking any chances. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah chaired an emergency meeting this morning with senior officials, including the Divisional Commissioner and Deputy Commissioners, to evaluate the preparedness and ensure swift response mechanisms are in place. Officers have been directed to stay vigilant and act promptly in case of any emergency.

Top political leaders Nasir Aslam Wani and Sakina Itoo are also expected to visit Vecho Nala to personally assess the ground reality and boost public confidence.

With rainfall continuing, the threat level remains high. The administration has warned residents to avoid venturing near riverbanks and flood-prone zones. People are urged to stay informed through official channels and cooperate fully with the authorities.
