Flood Alert in Srinagar: Residents Urged to Relocate for Safety Amid Rising Jehlum Levels

Urgent: Srinagar Locals Urged to Evacuate Amid Rising Flood Risk – A Community on Alert

Srinagar — In a heartfelt appeal to ensure safety over uncertainty, the Srinagar District Administration has urged residents of Lasjan, Soiteng, Nowgam, Vyethpora, Gopalpora, Padshahibagh, and Mehjoor Nagar to immediately move to safer areas as a precautionary measure.

The call comes in light of a reported breach at Shalina in Budgam, which has raised serious concerns about potential flooding in low-lying regions. In the early hours of Thursday, announcements were made via local Masjids, community committees, and on-ground revenue and police authorities, asking families to evacuate calmly and swiftly.

This isn’t just a warning — it’s a reminder that nature doesn’t always give a second chance. Authorities are doing everything they can, but the people’s cooperation is key to preventing avoidable tragedies.

According to officials, the Jhelum river has crossed the danger mark in multiple areas. At Sangam, the river was recorded at 27.64 feet at 2:00 AM, far above the danger level of 20 feet. At Ram Munshi Bagh, it was at 22.37 feet, again exceeding the 21-foot danger threshold. By 5:00 AM, water levels showed a slight dip — 27.48 feet at Sangam and 22.31 feet at Ram Munshi Bagh — yet the situation remains fragile.

While there is no need for panic, the administration stresses vigilance and readiness. Being alert now could mean everything in the hours to come.

This is not just about homes. It’s about lives.

Let’s stand together — community, authorities, and every individual — to ensure everyone’s safety during this critical time.
