Government Trials QR Code System to Ease Congestion at KLIA

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian government is set to introduce a trial Quick Response (QR) code system exclusively for Malaysians this month to streamline immigration processes at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminals 1 and 2.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail announced that 40 special lanes would be equipped with this system to address congestion at the country’s key entry points, particularly during peak travel periods and festive seasons.

“The QR code system offers a significant advantage in terms of speed and efficiency,” said Saifuddin. “Immigration checks using this technology will take only 5 to 7 seconds, a stark improvement compared to the 15 to 25 seconds required by conventional automatic gates.” He emphasized that the system enhances security, reduces inefficiencies, and employs cutting-edge technology to minimize potential leakages.

Notably, travelers using the QR code system will not need to present their passports during the checks but must keep them accessible throughout their journey. Manual counters and conventional automatic gates will remain operational alongside the QR code lanes, ensuring a smooth transition during the trial phase.

The initiative follows earlier remarks by Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Shamsul Anuar Nasarah, who highlighted in December the government’s plans to explore QR code-based solutions to alleviate bottlenecks at immigration counters.

This innovative step underscores Malaysia’s commitment to improving traveler experiences and modernizing its border security measures.
