Malaysia Braces for Rare Tropical Storm ‘Senyar’: Authorities Urge Preparedness as Heavy Rain, Strong Winds and Flood Risks Loom

Malaysia is on high alert as the country prepares for a rare tropical storm, Senyar, which was detected north of Sumatra and is currently positioned about 102 kilometres southwest of Lumut, Perak. According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), the storm is moving southeast through the Straits of Malacca at a speed of approximately 24 km/h, pushing directly toward the western corridor of Peninsular Malaysia.

MetMalaysia director-general Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip confirmed that the approaching weather system may bring prolonged heavy rainfall, powerful winds and dangerously rough sea conditions, affecting large parts of the peninsula from today until Saturday.

Updated warnings have been issued for continuous rainfall, tropical storm conditions, and strong winds with rough seas across major states, including Kedah, Penang, Perak, Pahang, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor. These warnings remain in effect from November 27 to 29.

A severe-level continuous rainfall warning is now active for:

  • Kedah (Kulim, Bandar Baharu)

  • Penang

  • Perak

  • Terengganu

  • Pahang (Cameron Highlands, Lipis, Raub, Bentong)

  • Selangor

  • Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya

Meanwhile, an alert-level rainfall warning covers:

  • Kelantan

  • Pahang (Jerantut, Temerloh, Maran, Kuantan, Bera, Pekan, Rompin)

  • Negeri Sembilan

  • Melaka

  • Johor (Tangkak, Segamat)
