Malaysia Sets Bold Vision: 38 Sports Proposed for the 2027 SEA Games

Malaysia is gearing up for a defining moment in regional sports leadership. Right after the conclusion of the ongoing SEA Games in Thailand, the nation will officially present its proposed list of 38 sports for the 2027 Southeast Asian Games, marking its first major move as the incoming chair of the Southeast Asian Games Federation (SEAGF).

Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria, President of the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM), shared that the list remains provisional, but it reflects Malaysia’s commitment to strengthening the sporting landscape across the region. He emphasised that as the National Olympic Committee, Malaysia carries the responsibility to uphold the integrity, development and unity of the SEA Games and the Olympic Movement in Southeast Asia.

During the final SEAGF Council meeting for the 2023–2025 term, OCM confirmed that Mohamad Norza presented the latest updates on Malaysia’s preparations for the 34th edition of the Games.

Set to take place from September 18 to 29, 2027, the Games will be spread across Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak, Penang and Johor, showcasing a nationwide celebration of sport, talent and culture. Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh recently revealed that the proposed list features key sports such as athletics, badminton, football, hockey and karate, offering a balanced mix of tradition, competitiveness and regional relevance.

Meanwhile, Thailand marks its historic moment as the 2025 host, with the opening ceremony staged today at the iconic Rajamangala National Stadium. The Games will run until December 20 across Bangkok and Chonburi, setting the stage before Malaysia takes the baton.
