Malaysia Strikes Historic Gold in Men’s T20 Cricket at SEA Games Thailand 2025

Malaysia has written a new chapter in its sporting history by winning its first-ever gold medal in men’s T20 cricket at the SEA Games Thailand 2025. The landmark achievement has not only sparked national pride but also ignited the team’s hunger for even greater success.

The Malaysian squad topped the standings in the single league-format competition after a convincing six-wicket victory over Singapore in their final group match at the Terdthai Cricket Ground. With four wins from four matches, Malaysia finished unbeaten on eight points to seal the championship in style.

Vice-captain Virandeep Singh, who played a crucial role with a composed 65-run knock despite battling a headache, said the gold medal has only strengthened the team’s ambition. The focus, he explained, is now firmly on securing another gold in the upcoming men’s T10 event, which begins on Monday.

“I am glad that we managed to get over the line and won the gold medal for Malaysia,” Virandeep shared after the match.

Virandeep also highlighted how his experience playing in overseas leagues has shaped his growth as a cricketer. Having competed in tournaments across Nepal, Canada, and the Cayman Islands, he believes such exposure has helped him learn to control nerves, stay calm, and deliver under pressure. These lessons, he added, are invaluable not just for him, but for the future of Malaysian cricket.

“I am blessed to be given such opportunities to play with our talented boys. I hope the world is watching, and that more of our players will get chances to join leagues around the world as well,” he said.

Team manager Vijayalingam Vythilingam praised the squad’s discipline and hard work, noting that the gold medal was the result of consistent performances and collective effort throughout the tournament.

Malaysia’s unbeaten campaign began with a 114-run victory over the Philippines, followed by a seven-wicket win against Indonesia, an eight-wicket triumph over hosts Thailand, and finally, the decisive win against Singapore.

The Philippines claimed the silver medal, while 2017 champions Singapore finished with bronze. Prior to this historic win, Malaysia had secured silver medals in the men’s cricket event at the 2017 and 2023 SEA Games.

The SEA Games Thailand 2025 is being held from December 9 to 20, across venues in Bangkok and Chonburi, bringing together athletes from across the region in a celebration of sporting excellence.

Beyond the medals and match results, this victory represents belief. It reflects years of quiet dedication, long training sessions, and players daring to dream bigger than ever before. For Malaysian cricket, this gold is not just a moment of triumph, but a promise of what lies ahead — a signal that the nation is ready to stand tall on the regional stage and chase even greater heights.
