Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be attending the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur virtually this weekend, as India continues to celebrate the festival of Deepavali, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim confirmed today.
Anwar shared that he recently received a phone call from Modi to discuss the next phase of Malaysia-India bilateral cooperation, focusing on elevating the partnership to a more strategic and comprehensive level.
“Prime Minister Modi informed me that due to the ongoing Deepavali festivities in India, he will participate in the ASEAN Summit virtually,” Anwar stated in a Facebook post earlier today.
Highlighting India’s role as a vital partner, Anwar emphasized the strong collaboration between Malaysia and India in the areas of trade, investment, technology, education, and regional security. He reaffirmed Malaysia’s continued commitment to deepening ASEAN-India relations for a region that thrives on peace, prosperity, and shared growth.
The 47th ASEAN Summit, hosted at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from October 26 to 28, will gather world leaders to discuss key regional and global issues. Malaysia, serving as this year’s ASEAN Chair, is expected to lead discussions on economic resilience, sustainable development, and regional security.
Previously, Anwar confirmed that US President Donald Trump is among the global leaders set to attend the event.
As the spirit of Deepavali lights up hearts across India, Modi’s virtual presence is a reminder that leadership transcends distance — and that meaningful diplomacy continues, even in celebration. It’s a gesture of balance between tradition and duty, and a testament to the growing synergy between nations in an ever-connected world.
