Peace & Prosperity Must Stand Together: Khaled Calls for Shared Security at ASEAN–China Defence Luncheon

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin delivered a powerful reminder today that the future of Southeast Asia depends on unity, dignity, and shared progress. Hosting the ASEAN–China Defence Ministers’ Luncheon, he emphasised that peace and prosperity are not separate goals — they are deeply linked and must be protected together.

Khaled expressed ASEAN’s appreciation for China’s ongoing commitment to regional stability and cooperation. He highlighted that ASEAN values partnerships built on respect, sovereignty, and trust — foundations that allow nations to grow and thrive side by side.

“Prosperity and security are inseparable,” Khaled said. “With regional peace comes shared prosperity, and with shared prosperity come trust, respect, and long-lasting relationships.”

He described the meeting as a symbol of meaningful partnership — a shared commitment to a safer and more connected region. A stable Southeast Asia, he noted, benefits not only ASEAN nations but also China, which plays a central role in global commerce and international exchanges.

Khaled further recognised China as a vital partner and a driver of global progress through its international initiatives, such as the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, Global Civilisation Initiative, and Global Governance Initiative.

However, he also underscored a crucial expectation — leadership comes with responsibility.

Khaled urged China to continue upholding international law, supporting mediation, and promoting peaceful solutions before conflicts emerge. With open dialogue and mutual respect, he expressed confidence that ASEAN and China can transform future challenges into shared opportunities.

The luncheon took place alongside the 19th ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM), joined by China’s Defence Minister Admiral Dong Jun and leaders from ASEAN nations. The ADMM and ADMM-Plus run from October 30 to November 2 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
