Srinagar | September 21 — In a heartening development for the people of Jammu & Kashmir, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha actively participated in a large-scale cleanliness drive at the iconic Dal Lake in Srinagar as part of the ongoing ‘Sewa Parv’ initiative. The campaign aims to inspire civic responsibility, environmental preservation, and public service through community action.
Speaking on the occasion, L-G Sinha shared, “As part of Sewa Parv, I joined the Dal Lake Cleanliness Drive. In the past five years, preservation work for Dal-Nigeen Lake and its catchment areas has been carried out in mission mode. Dal Lake is now visibly cleaner and attracting both domestic and international visitors.”
He highlighted a remarkable achievement: more than one-third of Dal Lake has been rejuvenated, with vast stretches previously choked by lilies now cleared. The lake’s open expanse has increased to over 20.3 sq km — a significant milestone in its revival. He also emphasized the importance of citizen participation in preserving water bodies, encouraging everyone to take ownership in safeguarding the region’s natural resources.
Dal Lake, often described as the “Jewel in the Crown of Kashmir”, is more than just a tourist hotspot. It is the lifeline of Srinagar, supporting the livelihoods of thousands involved in tourism, fishing, and floating gardens known as Raads. These gardens, blooming with lotus flowers in July and August, are a cultural and ecological marvel unique to the Valley.
Enveloped by a 15.5 km shoreline and lined with Mughal gardens, houseboats, and Shikara rides, the lake plays a pivotal role in the Valley’s economy and identity. It’s not only a scenic wonder but also a natural urban wetland, contributing to biodiversity and environmental balance.
In winter, temperatures plummet, freezing the lake and transforming it into a spectacle of icy beauty. Despite its grandeur, the lake has long battled with pollution and eutrophication. But now, with Rs 11 billion invested by the Union Government, a focused mission is underway to restore Dal Lake to its former ecological and visual splendor.
A Call to Every Citizen
This isn’t just about cleaning a lake — it’s about preserving the soul of a city, the identity of a people, and the promise we owe future generations. When leaders and locals join hands, transformation becomes inevitable. Now, it’s your turn.
If you live near a lake, a river, or even a small pond, start today. Pick up that plastic bag, plant that tree, educate one child about clean water — because when nature thrives, we all thrive.
Let Dal Lake be not just a reflection of the sky, but a reflection of what’s possible when we care.
