Tourism Restrictions in North Kashmir: Safety First Amid Unstable Weather

SRINAGAR – In a heartfelt move prioritizing public safety, the Tourism Department has temporarily restricted all trekking activities in Gulmarg and the neighboring districts of Baramulla, Bandipora, and Kupwara. This decision comes in light of unpredictable weather conditions that have recently swept through North Kashmir, making the region’s stunning but challenging terrain potentially dangerous for adventure seekers.

An official advisory released on Thursday by the Office of the Assistant Director Tourism, Gulmarg, clearly states that no trekking will be allowed — not even on the popular lower-altitude trails — without prior approval from competent authorities. The advisory underscores that these precautions are not just guidelines, but necessary steps to prevent potential mishaps.

“We understand the excitement and passion for exploring Kashmir’s breathtaking landscapes,” an official said, “but the safety of our people and visitors must always come first. These trails, while beautiful, can become treacherous in unpredictable weather.”

The advisory makes it clear: anyone choosing to trek without permission does so at their own risk. To ensure compliance and widespread awareness, copies of the order have been shared with Deputy Commissioners and Senior Superintendents of Police in all three affected districts, as well as tourism and information departments across the Valley.

Signed by the Assistant Director of Tourism, Gulmarg, the order is more than just a bureaucratic directive — it’s a preventive measure rooted in care. By restricting movement during these volatile weather conditions, authorities hope to avoid emergencies and safeguard lives.

As the region awaits clearer skies, trekkers and tourists are encouraged to stay informed, respect local guidelines, and prepare thoroughly before planning any outdoor activities.
