Early on Friday, the Russian Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, a vital hub for the nation’s oil exports, was hit by a Ukrainian drone attack that caused significant damage to a docked ship, residential buildings, and an oil depot. Russian authorities reported that three crew members aboard the vessel sustained injuries and were immediately hospitalized.
The attack raised immediate concerns about global energy supply, sending crude oil prices up by roughly 2% as traders reacted to potential disruptions. Novorossiysk, one of Russia’s key oil export points, has seen repeated assaults on its infrastructure this year, including drone and unmanned boat attacks targeting ports, pipelines, and refineries.
According to industry sources, the port handled 3.22 million tonnes of crude oil in October alone, equating to 761,000 barrels per day. From January through October, Novorossiysk exported 24.716 million tonnes. Additionally, oil product exports totaled 1.794 million tonnes in October and 16.783 million tonnes over the first ten months of the year.
Governor Veniamin Kondratyev of the Krasnodar region confirmed on social media that “Novorossiysk suffered the most” during the attack. He highlighted the swift response of more than 170 personnel and 50 pieces of equipment who worked overnight to extinguish fires and provide aid to affected residents.
The operational headquarters later confirmed that the fire at the Sheskharis terminal, which manages crude oil and oil product exports, had been fully extinguished. While fragments from the drones shattered windows in at least four apartments, no residents were reported injured. Coastal infrastructure also sustained damage, though officials did not provide detailed assessments.
While the attacks were widely reported by Russian authorities, Reuters could not independently verify the events, and Ukrainian officials have not provided an immediate comment. This latest incident underscores the ongoing volatility in the Black Sea region and the vulnerability of critical energy infrastructure amidst escalating geopolitical tensions.
As the local community begins to recover, the swift emergency response and coordinated firefighting efforts highlight the resilience of Novorossiysk residents and authorities.
